OUR FAVOURITE LAKES

The Allgäu region is a very attractive holiday region for all kinds of nature lovers. Especially in the area surrounding Füssen and in the area south of Kempten, you can find many idyllic lakes. The latter are perfect destinations for a walk, a cycling tour or a hiking tour. In summer, most lakes are great for going for a swim and relaxing in the sun. Have a look at our favourites.

FÜSSEN

FORGGENSEE

The “Forggensee”–one of the largest reservoirs in Bavaria–is known for its view of Neuschwanstein Castle, the symbol of the east Allgäu region. The reservoir has already been a landmark in the Füssen area for almost 50 years now. Many bike paths and hiking trails make it a perfect destination. For those interested, the museum at barrage 1 provides information about the reservoir.

Another highlight for a perfect day trip: From the beginning of June to the middle of October, you can explore the lake on an excursion boat. This trip provides you with a beautiful view of the landscape and Neuschwanstein Castle. You can choose between a short and long boat tour.

OBERDORF

NIEDERSONFTHOFENER SEE

By now, you have certainly noticed that the Allgäu has a wide variety of lakes. The lake “Niedersonthofener See” is also located in a conservation and recreation area, near Waltenhofen, only ten kilometres from Kempten. The large lake has a surface of 162 hectares and hosts swimmers, rowers, sailors and fishing enthusiasts in the summer. There are also changing rooms at four official bathing areas.

The 7.4-kilometre path around the lake is well-maintained and signposted. It is the perfect destination for a day trip in the Allgäu.

IMMENSTADT

GROßER ALPSEE

The alpine lake “Großer Alpsee” is the biggest natural lake in the Allgäu region. It is located in the middle of a beautiful mountain, forest and meadow landscape and is characterised by its clear waters.

The are many swimming coves and some restaurants and beach bars, as well as a small port with a lake stage, where many events take place in the summer. The south shore of the lake provides a naturist beach.
The lake is especially popular among sailors, surfers and kiters due to its valley location and the resulting winds. The various hiking routes all around the lake provide many beautiful views.
