“The Forggensee is my favourite place as it combines my love for the mountains and the lakes. Simply the epitome of the landscape where I grew up.”
The Forggensee near Füssen is a reservoir with a surface of 15.2 km2. It is the fifth largest lake in Bavaria and the largest reservoir in Germany. It is the result of the construction of a dam at the river Lech and is a real attraction in the Allgäu region.
The Forggensee is a very popular destination for tourists as well as for water sports and fishing enthusiasts. All around the lake, numerous leisure activities are possible, for example swimming, sailing, surfing, cycling and hiking. Idyllic villages and towns are located near the lake, such as Füssen, Schwangau and Roßhaupten.
The Forggensee is also known for the festival theatre Neuschwanstein. It is located directly at the lake, opposite the Neuschwanstein castle. An extensive programme including cultural highlights awaits the guests. One of those highlights is the Ludwig musical. Other musicals as well as concerts, variety shows and open-air events also take place at the festival theatre. You can find more information on the website.
For flood protection at the Lech, the water level of the lake is significantly lowered in winter, creating a desert-like atmosphere. The lake is thus a phenomenon at every time of the year.
